Samurai, nuns, a Mexican fiesta and a Parisian cabaret — the most playful arena show of her later career, and it ended with Madonna alone on stage, telling stories.
The Story
By 2015, Madonna had accumulated more than three decades of songs, images and stage personas, but the Rebel Heart Tour was not conceived as a retrospective. Instead, it placed the fractured, defiant world of Rebel Heart at its centre and allowed older songs to be pulled into that new landscape. Love, rebellion, religion, sexuality and survival moved through a production that was characteristically theatrical while often feeling unexpectedly playful.
The Entrance
The show opened with Madonna lowered from the rafters in a cage, surrounded by dancers carrying crosses, for “Iconic”. From there it moved through four worlds — warrior, rockabilly, Latin fiesta and 1920s glamour — with the hits reworked to fit each one: “La Isla Bonita” as a street party, “Living for Love” with a matador’s cape.
The Heart
The staging stretched deep into the arena, with a cross-shaped runway leading to a heart-shaped platform surrounded by the audience. Across its different sections Madonna moved between martial imagery, Japanese street culture, rockabilly, Latin influences and 1920s glamour, while familiar songs were repeatedly rearranged or reframed. The result was a tour that balanced spectacle with a looser sense of connection, allowing moments of humour, conversation and spontaneity to sit alongside some of the most technically elaborate staging of her career.

Tears of a Clown
The tour’s last surprise came in Australia, her first shows there since 1993. Alongside the arena dates, Madonna staged the intimate Tears of a Clown — dressed as a clown, on a tricycle, singing rarely heard songs and telling stories in a small room. After eighty-odd nights of spectacle, it was the most personal thing on the itinerary.
