Notes
Executive-produced by Madonna for the John Schlesinger film in which she starred with Rupert Everett, The Next Best Thing is less a conventional Madonna record than a carefully assembled snapshot of the music surrounding her at the turn of the millennium. Madonna personally selected its tracks, bringing together artists including Moby, Beth Orton, Groove Armada, Métisse and Manu Chao. Her own contribution was deliberately small but significant: the William Orbit-produced reworking of Don McLean’s “American Pie” and the original “Time Stood Still”. The soundtrack reached No. 34 on the US Billboard 200, while “American Pie” became a No. 1 single in the UK and several other countries.
THE STORY
A reflection on the record — what it means, where it sits, what it connects to.
