Resident DJ at New York’s Funhouse | His own single “Sidewalk Talk” (1984), written by Madonna
Before the videos, the tours and the reinventions, there was a dance floor in downtown New York and a DJ who knew a hit when he heard one.
The Funhouse
In the early 1980s, New York’s clubs were where records were made or broken, and John “Jellybean” Benitez was one of the city’s most influential DJs. From the booth at the Funhouse he could test a record on a packed floor and know within minutes whether it worked.
Madonna understood that world completely. She had grown up on dance music and came up through the downtown scene, and the DJs were her first audience.

Holiday
“Holiday” was not written by Madonna. It came from Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens of the group Pure Energy, and it was Jellybean who brought it to her and produced it for her debut album.
The result was light, bright and irresistible: a party record with a hint of melancholy. It became her breakthrough hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and it has opened, closed or lit up almost every tour she has played since.
Crazy for You
In 1985, Jellybean produced “Crazy for You” for the film Vision Quest. Written by John Bettis and Jon Lind, it showed another side of Madonna: a ballad singer with real warmth in the voice. It went to No. 1 in the United States and later anchored Something to Remember.
The Legacy
Jellybean’s time in Madonna’s story was short, but it was foundational. He helped prove that a club record could cross over into the mainstream without losing its pulse, and that the dance floor would always be her home ground.
