After Bedtime Stories, Madonna wanted to go further out — into texture, space and something closer to the spiritual. William Orbit gave her the sound for it, and in doing so changed the shape of her career.

From Strange Cargo

Born William Mark Wainwright in London’s East End in 1956, Orbit left school at sixteen, busked in London and Paris, and taught himself to make records in his own Guerilla Studios. In the late 1980s he began the Strange Cargo series of instrumental albums, where his signature first took shape: electronics that felt warm, spacious and strangely human.

He was already part of Madonna’s story before they met. He had remixed “Justify My Love” and “Erotica”, and by the time they began working together in 1997 he understood exactly what her voice could do inside a sound that breathed.

Ray of Light

Ray of Light took four months to make — at the time, the longest Madonna had spent on any record. Orbit layered guitars, synthesisers and loops into something that drifted between ambient, trance and pop, while Madonna sang with a new depth and control.

The record was released on 22 February 1998 and won the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Madonna later credited Orbit with inspiring songs such as “Drowned World/Substitute for Love” and “Swim”.

After the Light

The partnership continued. Orbit co-wrote and performed on “Beautiful Stranger”, which won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and contributed to Music in 2000 with tracks including “Amazing” and “Runaway Lover”.

Years later he returned for MDNA, co-producing six tracks — among them “Masterpiece”, which won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

The Legacy

Orbit died at his home in London on 23 July 2026, aged 69. Away from Madonna, his fingerprints are on Blur’s 13, All Saints’ “Pure Shores” and his own Pieces in a Modern Style. But for many listeners, his name will always mean one thing: the moment Madonna found the light. For MLVC’s tribute, read William Orbit | THE Sound.
