A ticking clock, a famous ABBA riff and a pink leotard: “Hung Up” brought Madonna back to the dance floor and took her to number one around the world.
The Song
Built on a sample of ABBA’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”, it was only possible because Madonna wrote personally to Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, who rarely allow their music to be sampled. Stuart Price turned it into a continuous, euphoric club track.
The Video
Johan Renck’s video moves between a dance studio, where Madonna rehearses alone, and dancers across a city at night, all heading to the same arcade.
The Charts
It reached number one in the UK and in more than forty countries, and number seven in the US — her 36th top ten.
On Stage
It closed the Confessions Tour in 2006.
