The Celebration Tour: Forty Years, Told in Order

It should have started in Vancouver in July. Instead, the Celebration Tour began in London, at The O2, on 14 October 2023.

The delay had a reason that frightened everyone who loves her music. In June 2023, Madonna was taken into hospital with a serious bacterial infection, and the tour was postponed while she recovered. So when the lights went down in London that October night, the room carried more than excitement. It carried relief.

MADONNA

Her story, from the beginning

This was her first true retrospective tour, and she chose to tell it in order: from the downtown New York clubs where it all began, through the provocations, reinventions and losses of four decades, to the woman on stage now. Stuart Price, back as musical director, rebuilt the songs so that they belonged to one long night rather than to their separate eras.

It was a show about the people around her as much as about herself. Bob the Drag Queen guided the audience through the decades. Her children appeared on stage. And “Live to Tell” became a memorial to the friends and artists lost to AIDS, their faces filling the arena while she sang.

A look back from someone who had just been reminded how precious looking forward is.

Where it ended

Seven months later the tour closed on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, with the free show on Copacabana that became one of the largest audiences of her career — a night told in full in Copacabana: The Night 1.6 Million Came Dancing.

But it all began in London, with a woman who had every reason to rest choosing instead to stand up and tell her story one more time. It was also where the next chapter quietly started: the reunion with Stuart Price that would lead, three years later, to Confessions II.
