Madonna returns to the VMAs — and refuses to look backwards
Twenty-three years after her last VMA performance, Madonna returned to the stage that helped define her career.
The obvious choice would have been nostalgia.
She chose the present.
Opening the 2026 VMAs in Los Angeles, Madonna centred the performance on Confessions II, rather than reaching for Like a Virgin, Vogue or a greatest-hits medley.
That mattered.

Back where it began
Madonna and the VMAs have been linked since 1984, when Like a Virgin helped establish both artist and awards show as cultural provocateurs.
Later came Vogue, Ray of Light and the 2003 performance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Then came a 23-year absence.
On 27 September 2026, Madonna returned to open the show — but not to replay the past.

The present tense
The performance drew from Confessions II, including “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria Afterhours”.
Sabrina Carpenter joined Madonna for “Bring Your Love”, while Charli xcx appeared for “Danceteria”, extending the current era rather than interrupting it with a retrospective.

Debi Mazar, Julia Garner and Seth Rogen also appeared, giving the performance the feel of a deliberately crowded Madonna universe rather than a conventional awards-show medley.
It was theatrical, slightly chaotic and firmly rooted in 2026.
Still participating
The presence of Carpenter and Charli mattered because Madonna was not being positioned simply as the artist who influenced everyone who followed.
She was working alongside them.
That distinction is important.
This was not a tribute to Madonna.
It was Madonna participating in contemporary pop culture on her own terms.

Seven Moon People
Madonna left the VMAs with seven awards, including Artist of the Year.
More than four decades after her first appearance at the ceremony, the symmetry was difficult to miss.
In 1984, she arrived with something to prove.
In 2026, she returned with very little left to prove — and still refused to stand still.

Why it Matters
Long careers often become exercises in commemoration.
Madonna has rarely seemed comfortable with that.
Her VMA return acknowledged the history without becoming trapped by it. She could have returned as an icon celebrating what she had already achieved.
Instead, she arrived with a new record, new collaborators and a performance built around the present.
For Madonna, perhaps that remains the point.
