Notes

Madame X is one of Madonna’s most restless and outward-looking records, shaped by the cultural collisions she encountered while living in Lisbon. Fado, morna, batuka, Latin pop, electronic production and orchestral textures move through a record that resists a single identity, just as its title character does. Political anger, spiritual searching, intimacy and theatrical invention sit beside one another, producing a work that feels deliberately unstable and unusually free. Rather than smoothing its influences into conventional pop, Madame X embraces dislocation, allowing different languages, rhythms and personas to collide until the record becomes less a fixed destination than a map of movement.
