Released in 2019, Medellín opened the Madame X era with a soft-focus cha-cha pulse, Latin-pop textures and a playful duet with Maluma. As the lead single, it introduced Madonna’s new persona: Madame X, the secret agent, dancer, teacher, nun, cha-cha instructor and restless traveller. The track was released on 17 April 2019, ahead of the album’s June release. 

Medellín remains a key Madame X single because it announced the era through mood rather than force. It invited listeners into a new world of masks, accents, rituals and alter egos, showing Madonna less interested in repeating a pop formula than building a character-driven universe. In the archive, it stands as the first full glimpse of Madame X: elegant, peculiar, sensual and armed with a cane.
