The Drowned World Tour

Drowned World Tour was Madonna’s fifth concert tour and her first since The Girlie Show in 1993. Staged across Europe and North America in 2001, the tour focused heavily on Ray of Light and Music, with selected material from Bedtime Stories and only a small number of earlier hits. This made the production feel unusually forward-facing: less a career summary than a statement of where Madonna had moved creatively by the turn of the millennium. With Jamie King involved in the tour concept, and costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier, D Squared and Arianne Phillips, the show built a highly stylised world of transformation, discipline and digital-era tension.

As a Madonna tour, Drowned World is deliberately unsentimental. It resists the easy comfort of nostalgia and instead builds a stage language around identity, motherhood, violence, spirituality, technology and performance as survival. Its power lies in that refusal to behave like a standard pop comeback. Madonna returned to the road, but not to reassure anyone. She arrived armoured, luminous and remote, dragging the audience into the weather system of her late-1990s reinvention.
