Who’s That Girl Tour

Who’s That Girl Tour

Who’s That Girl World Tour marked Madonna’s first major step onto the global touring stage. Following the commercial dominance of True Blue and the release of the Who’s That Girl film and soundtrack, the tour opened in Japan before moving through North America and Europe. With Level 42 as support act, the production expanded beyond the compact force of The Virgin Tour, using larger venues, stronger visual staging and a more confident sense of Madonna as both pop singer and live spectacle.

As a Madonna tour, Who’s That Girl is the bridge between early-star electricity and full-scale pop architecture. The show still carries the brightness of her mid-1980s image, but the machinery is growing: video, choreography, costume changes, character work and stadium-scale control all begin to gather around her. It is the sound of Madonna learning how to fill not just a stage, but a whole field of expectation. The world tour format suited her. Naturally, she treated the globe as lighting design.
